HELP IN DISTRESS
"“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.”"
— PSALM 4:1
In moments of distress, the natural human response is to panic, complain, or look for immediate solutions. But not David, he always turns directly to God in prayer. He understands that true help only comes from God.
David addresses God as “the God of my righteousness.” This reveals a deep confidence: his standing with God is not based on his own works, but on God’s faithfulness. In the same way, when we face challenges, we can approach God boldly, knowing He is both willing and able to help us. Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
The phrase “thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress” reminds us that God has a track record of delivering His people. “Enlargement” speaks of relief, freedom, and expansion in a season of pressure, as we see even in our nation today. No matter how tight or difficult things may seem, God is able to create space for you again. Psalm 50:15 – “Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee…”
Your response in distress determines your outcome, when you turn to God, you position yourself for divine help. Jeremiah 33:3 – “Call unto me, and I will answer thee…” Distress is not the end of your story. It is often the setting where God reveals His power, faithfulness, and ability to save. When you call on Him, He hears—and He responds.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my help in times of distress. By your mercy, bring me into a place of enlargement again. Strengthen my heart and let Your help be evident in my life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
