MERCY; GOD’S GIFT I
"So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy."
— ROMANS 9:16
A gift is something given freely, without payment or qualification. In the same way, God’s mercy is not something we earn or deserve. It does not come because of human effort, intelligence, or strength, but because God chooses to show compassion.
Life often presents situations that human ability cannot solve. At such moments, mercy becomes the answer. Mercy explains why some advance beyond their effort and why others receive help where logic fails. The Apostle Paul reminds us that progress in the kingdom of God is not determined by how much we desire it or how hard we try, but by God’s mercy at work in our lives.
Through mercy, God lifts us above our limitations. He places us in positions our labour alone could never secure. Mercy opens doors, changes outcomes, and turns struggles into testimonies. As the Amplified Bible explains, God’s gift does not depend on human willingness or strenuous effort, but on His decision to show mercy.
Ephesians 2:8–9 further confirms this truth: “…it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Every blessing we enjoy, every victory we record, and every opportunity we receive is evidence of God’s mercy.
Nothing we have as believers is a personal achievement. All that we are and all that we become flow from God’s mercy working in us. Recognizing this keeps us humble, grateful, and fully dependent on God.
